Hello all, hope you’re all being good and keeping out of trouble.
1,000 Subscribers
Substack inform me that we have now reached 1,000 subscribers, which is a fantastic start to the weekend. The motivation behind this newsletter is to return to my roots, basic blog writing on historical thoughts where they pop into my mind or research, and to break the dependency on increasingly unstable social media.
For authors, getting their work out there is 90% of the battle, and to sell even a few hundred copies relies on relentless pushing, pushing, pushing. Only the very few sell in the thousands, so the rest of us have to keep promoting at every instance. With social media no longer reliable to reach the reader, or potential reader, we need to diversify, and so, here we are.
Of course, the fact that social media companies are intent on suppressing Substack has proven concerning in trying to drive my readers here, but thankfully at least a thousand of you have followed me here, so thank you, thank you, thank you.
This is a free subscription and though many of you have ‘pledged’ to sign up for $5 a month, I have no intentions at present to change this. It’s meant to be a casual connection between you and I, to share history, and to have fun doing so. I mean, ideally you’d buy my books but either way!

Absolutely love your work and the frenemy relationship you have with Matt Lewis. My knowledge on the Beauforts is limited and I think your book would fill that gap!
Oh I’d love a hard copy. I’ve only read on the kindle! Nothing like a paper book
