In November 2018, I had the great honour of featuring as a guest historian on the hugely successful genealogy TV programme, Who Do You Think You Are?
We all know the format of the series – a celebrity participant researches their family history, with guest historians or archivists assisting along the journey. The result is often remarkable, sometimes tragic, and often poignant.
In this particular episode, it was my incredible honour to meet with the Australian TV personality and journalist Jennifer Byrne at a bitterly cold Raby Castle in County Durham. She was there to learn more about one of her ancestors Joan Beaufort, the countess of Westmorland who lived at Raby in the beginning of the fifteenth century.
Anyone who has read my book ‘The House of Beaufort: The Bastard Line that Captured the Crown’ will know that Joan had a very interesting family background, a royal pedigree that Jennifer was not aware of. It was, then, right in the heart of the medieval chapel, my great duty to let her know that was, in fact, of royal stock.
You can watch the clip and the reveal below.
If you are interested in learning more about Joan Beaufort, a remarkable woman who through her SIXTEEN children was truly the mother of the 15th Century, consider checking out my bestselling book The House of Beaufort: The Bastard Line that Captured the Crown’, an epic sweep through one hundred years of a remarkable family that rose to great heights before a traumatic fall.
