As always a great read. York, one of my favourite cities and a must go to whenever I am in England. My must go to visits are to Warwick, York, Carlisle ( I used to live in Stanwix as a child) Durham, Hexham. Obviously Scotland and Wales are on my itinerary too but I’m talking about England. If there is any group of Islands that are of interest to historians or lovers of outstanding scenic beauty, the British Isles are matchless, in my opinion anyway.
I worked as a newspaper reporter in York in the 1970s. In that role I became very familiar with several of York's multitude of pubs. Nice article ... and Cheers!
The Rose and Crown in Ludlow is one of my favourite historic pubs, and it is fairly local to me as well. I also like The Royal Standard of England in Buckinghamshire. One pub I have not yet been to, but really want to visit, is the Skirrid Inn in the Brecon Beacons. It is said to be Wales’ oldest pub, and also has a reputation for being haunted.
I "studied" in York 1972-75 (actually spent most of my time in tea-shops, pubs and on the river in an inflatable boat). What an inspired idea to write a book about York pubs. The Old Gray Mare in Clifton was about 10 metres from my student flat, I "worked" there as a student p/time (actually flirted and gossiped and pulled the odd pint). Another favourite -The Lion and Lamb on Blossom Street (recommended as an actual York population's pub, not frequented by students or tourists). If I still lived in York, I would definitely buy this book!
That was my 'local' pub but it wasn't the best. Easier just to walk into town and visit others. I think it was even an Indian restaurant for a bit. Don't think it's long for this world.

Wish I'd known about your York pub guide before visiting in June, so many old pubs, I love Ye Olde Starre Inn
Cheers.

Oh dear that's sad. If a pub can't survive in York..... Maybe just exactly that, it doesn't appeal to students or tourists.
