Back in February 2023, I had the great honour of being part of an event called ‘Britain’s Greatest Monarch’, where a series of historians had about twenty minutes to put their case to a sold-out Southwark Cathedral. Julian Humphrys amusingly put the case forward for John, Michael Jones for Henry V, Ian Mortimer for Edward III, Alison Weir for Henry VIII, Sarah Gristwood for Elizabeth I, Siobhan Clarke for Anne, Andrew Nunn for Elizabeth II,
Of course, it fell to me to champion Henry VII. Just for you, my fantastic and supportive Substack following, I recorded that talk and post it here for you. And so, I ask you…who do you think is Britain’s Greatest Monarch and why?
Oh, and as for the winner - it was Edward III, who beat Henry VII by one single solitary vote!
