I'm going to visit the NPG for the first time on Saturday and the Tudor gallery is on my must-see list. I'm also going to see the Hans Holbein exhibition at the Queen's Gallery at Buckingham Palace, can't wait!

Thank you for this insightful post! I hadn’t heard that the portrait was no longer attributed to Sittow, so that’s great info. I hear you about museums. I’m a native New Yorker, now living in Arizona, and I really miss the variety of museums in NYC. I especially enjoyed the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and visit whenever I’m back in NY. I’ve been to London multiple times, but haven’t hit the NPG yet. Next visit for sure. Last museum I visited in London was the British Museum.

A great post - I really enjoyed this! I’ve been to the National Gallery many times yet the Portrait Gallery has often been closed when I visited. I didn’t know the types of paintings it contains! 🤩

I think it was closed for 3 years for renovations.

Ah yes that makes sense. I might plan a visit there next time I’m down in London 😊

I never knew that the portrait was likely to show a potential wife! Nor the details about the frame. I love all of details you included. Thank you!

Thank you for posting the details in this portrait of Henry in 1505. He looks as if he has the weight of the world on his shoulders. I suppose he probably did. He had lost his eldest son and heir, Prince Arthur, lost his companion and wife, Elizabeth and three more children. He had one son to nurture and succeed him, Prince Henry and he must have been concerned. He had lived through a number of plots and conspiracies and was being very careful after 20 years of ruling England and Wales. The stress shows in his eyes. If only we knew what he really looked like in 1486 at the time of his marriage. A very underrated King.

It has always been my favourite Gallery since my grandmother took me there when I was ten. I am a Londoner bred and born in Whitechapel but aside from a two year residency between birth and two, I have never lived there. Nonetheless every year or so from the age of seven I spent a month or more with my grandmother and she took me to literally every museum and art gallery in the Capital. Including Horniman’s Museum with its famous Apostle Clock. So, when I visit the city of my birth, I know where to go. NPG followed by the V&A. After that, so many wonderful historic places almost around every corner and down every winding back street.

Why don't we have any earlier portraits of Henry, Nathen? He had plenty of artists at his Court. I can't believe he didn't have anything painted when he first got married. He spent enough money on furs and jewellery for himself, Elizabeth and his family. He must, surely have spent something on a portrait, especially a twin portrait with Elizabeth? I would love to know what 28 or 29 years old Henry Tudor looked like. Maybe there's a panel portrait somewhere. You should ask someone like Owen Hargreaves or Ronald Hui to see if they can find one.

It was lovely to see the portraits in Liverpool in 2022 as part of our Tudors exhibition. Privilege to see so many, some rare things as well like the Westminster Tournament Roll and Bacton Alter Cloth. Made a couple of visits to get the best out of them.
