Indexes are also a pain in the ass for people like me, who HAVE to read every word in the book — or at least get glazed eyes on it. The book doesn’t feel done until I’ve turned every single page. Indexes torture and delight us all.
Great post Nathen. My index was accidentally missed by the publisher in my first book and I was devastated! I now start my index when I'm writing, not all of it of course, but a name or a place goes straight into my index, saves me a little time later on.
I was searching for something in an index that I thought for sure would be in there- it escapes me now but I was frustrated when it wasn't there and I had to go digging through the book for it ... so thank you !! Especially bc I am someone who uses and appreciates your indexes continuously 🏆

Tidbit or titbit? Is it a different side of the ocean thing?
Thank you for this Nathen! This was a very useful and engaging insight into the process which I am sure to refer back to!

I recently added Index, A History of the: A Bookish Adventure by Dennis Duncan to my ever-growing To Read list.
I'd never heard of that until about 20 minutes ago when I googled 'indexing'. Looks intriguing.
